Education

AI presents a unique opportunity to transform our education system—from preschool, community colleges, to PhDs. Research consistently shows that investing in a child’s education delivers the greatest return on investment, driving innovation and strengthening our economy.  AI can be used to reduce administrative burdens for teachers to offering personalized tutoring once out of reach for many families. When balanced thoughtfully with in-person instruction, these technologies can enhance—not replace—human educators, potentially increasing the number of teachers.  This is a collaborative effort we must pursue—for the sake of future generations.

"It’s going to take humans staying in the loop, being part of the development, and being very thoughtful and engaged to make sure that AI is used in a way that's beneficial,” says an Innovative School district superintendent. Digital Promise has built an AI Literacy Framework to help districts understand how to best use, understand, and evaluate AI systems. The organization is also working with leaders in its League of Innovative Schools network to identify five topics that their policies need to include in order to be responsive, not just to AI, but to emerging technologies more broadly.  What Do School and District Leaders Need to Know About AI?

"Every student deserves the chance to get a high-quality education, no matter where they live or how much their family makes. Strengthening America’s education system – from K-12, to higher education, to career and technical education – is good for students, communities, and the economy." Supporting Student Success

"The objective of public education should not be learning how to use any one tool. It should be mastering core concepts, developing critical thinking and reasoning skills, and imparting essential values, including those that AI struggles with, such as trustworthiness."  Michael R. Bloomberg

James J. Heckman

2000 Nobel Prize Winner in Economics

"The Heckman Equation is an initiative of the Center for the Economics of Human Development. The Center conducts and synthesizes wide-ranging research that explores the circumstances under which people develop the skills necessary to achieve their fullest potential and thrive in the current economy. For anyone looking for upstream solutions to the biggest problems facing America, the Heckman Equation initiative understands the great gains to be had by investing in the early and equal development of human potential. This investment leads to lifelong success, increased productivity, and reduced societal costs." Center for the Economics of Human Development

“The most successful students will be those who use AI to help make conceptual connections for developing ideas. Students who learn to use AI ethically and productively may learn not only at an exponentially higher rate than others but also in a way that allows them to remain competitive throughout their careers. They will have a deeper understanding of the given subject matter, because they will know how to get their questions answered. Rather than atrophying, their curiosity muscle will be strengthened.”  Brave New Words: How AI Will Revolutionize Education (and Why That's a Good Thing)
