What is "Augment Washing"?

Augment washing is when companies or AI developers claim that artificial intelligence will “augment human workers”—helping people do their jobs better—while in reality designing or deploying systems that replace those workers instead. It’s a form of public relations spin meant to make automation sound empowering rather than extractive. Just as “greenwashing” hides environmental harm behind eco-friendly language, augment washing hides job displacement and widening inequality behind the promise of “productivity gains” and “upskilling.”

From the RAISE-UP perspective, this matters because it obscures the real economic and moral choices society faces. When corporations claim that AI will empower workers but use it to cut labor costs, they redirect the benefits of innovation toward shareholders instead of the people who make economies function. RAISE-UP calls for transparency and accountability in how AI is developed and deployed—redirecting its purpose toward true augmentation: creating meaningful work, improving livelihoods, and making the essentials of life—healthcare, housing, and education—more affordable for everyone. The goal is not to slow innovation, but to ensure it lifts people up rather than quietly replacing them.

RAISE-UP is in active development. We are seeking board members and founding partners to launch our 2026 pilot program. Contact us to learn more.

The purpose of RAISE-UP is to harness the transformative power of artificial intelligence to enable all people to flourish. We do this by empowering individuals and communities to make informed and challenging choices that will shape their futures.
